As per the IITGN guidelines, we offer courses with 10 hours of academic practice which includes both theory and its practical implementation. Our short courses are expansive in their scope, covering different aspects of academic as well as creative writing. Writing for Engineering
SC 295 – NIVID Desai
This short course covers the essentials of general writing skills that professional avenues in engineering and technology require. Participants learn writing techniques such as clarity, brevity and descriptive precision. The instructor discusses these skills within the context of writing technical descriptions, product descriptions, professional reports and creating a narrative for products. This course fuses the expressive power of writing with the innovative power of engineering.
Scientific Writing
SC 287, SC 273, SC 270, SC 262, SC 259 – Dr Monal Desai
This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of scientific writing. The participants of this course construct a scientific document, which is an essential skill to succeed in academics. They learn the unwritten rules which eventually help their chances of publishing in good quality journals. Topics include academic writing, grammar, developing a paragraph, sections of research paper, academic integrity, plagiarism and scientific poster making. The course comprises carefully designed assignments and exercises to test the level of understanding. The students can interact with the instructors by scheduling one-on-one online sessions.
Spoken Word Poetry
SC 269 – Nivid Desai
Through this short course, the participants get a holistic understanding of the art form from the perspectives of writing and performance. Divided evenly to focus on both the elements in detail, the workshop provides background on the writing techniques used in the form, directions about stage performance, thought-provoking prompts and personalised critical review and guidance on each participant’s poetry and performance.
Writing Mathematics in the Sciences
SC 286, sc 274, SC 263 – Dr Monal Desai
This course provides fundamental general and scientific writing skills, especially geared towards Mathematics students. The initial focus of this course is on general writing with hands-on practice of communicating mathematical ideas and knowledge in an accessible way for the general audience. Students will learn techniques of reader-centered writing, sentence formation, and punctuation. Then the focus shifts to scientific writing, preparing students for writing academic and research reports. They learn how to logically present their arguments following the format commonly used in the discipline of Mathematics. Carefully designed assignments and exercises are provided at each module. The students then schedule group or one-on-one meetings with the instructors.
Flash Fiction
SC 280 – Nivid Desai
This short course offers to equip the participants with the foundational skills of storytelling. Flash fiction is a subgenre of fiction that tells impactful stories in a limited number of words. Featuring curated material and thought-provoking prompts, this course exposes the participants to the subgenre in its entirety, covering aspects of both form and content. In theory, this course introduces the participants to the basic foundations of storytelling such as plot, conflict, narrative structure, and characterisation. In practice, it covers all forms of flash fiction through prompt-based writing exercises: six-word stories, 140-character stories (Microfiction or Twitterature), 50-word stories (Dribble), 100-word stories (Drabble), 750-word stories (Sudden fiction), and 1000-word stories (flash fiction). The instructor will mentor participants throughout writing their creative stories, ranging from developing a story idea to adapting it into different forms of flash fiction.
